Job Title: COPR05 - CORRECTIONAL OFFICER

Job Type: Full Time

Salary $2,735.00 - $3,217.00 per month

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety and high correctional standards as well as a safe, supportive work environment for our employees. We now seek Correctional Officers for the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, WY, the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp in Newcastle, WY, the Wyoming Honor Farm in Riverton, WY, the Wyoming Women's Center in Lusk, WY and the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington, WY.

This position is essential for maintaining safety and security of the institution and is considered a Law Enforcement position receiving the 20 year retirement package. This is an entry-level position and career/growth opportunities are available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

In order to maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires the following:

Enforcement of rules and regulations.

Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts.

Modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior.

Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior.

Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items.

Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations.

Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.

Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers and inmate living areas that monitor inmate movements.

Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.

Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required.

Assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations.

Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the processing of released inmates.

Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of security measures, techniques and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen and other pre-employment testing prior to appointment

Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required; and the ability to work on any shift, holidays and weekends

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is a Drug Free Workplace. Per WDOC policy, all staff are subject to drug testing while employed by WDOC. Successful applicants for employment must pass a background/reference check, medical evaluation and urinalysis drug test prior to appointment.

Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance; walking on cement floors on a constant basis; walking up and down stairs on a frequent basis; bending, squatting and kneeling on a regular basis; kicking the leg up to knee level on an occasional basis; striking or punching with both arms on an occasional basis, standing on a regular basis, talking/hearing on a regular basis; and the visual ability to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned

This position is inside on a frequent basis, has the potential for exposure to infectious diseases and is required to work around convicted felons.

PREFERENCES:
Preference will be given to those with a High school diploma or GED, 18 years or and older, must be a US citizen, have a valid driver's license, and have no felony or domestic violence convictions.

REQUIRED: All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and become POST Certified within one year of Initial Appointment
